Brooklyn, New York, is getting a brand new market. But this one is much more than the standard collection of farmers' stands.

The new Dekalb Market in downtown Brooklyn will be built out of recycled shipping containers and other repurposed materials. Artists, chefs, and entrepreneurs will convert the salvaged containers into venues for art, eating, and enterprise. The idea is to make a modular market that can bring more than just consumerism to the neighborhood and in the process revitalize the currently vacant space.

And you can help design it. Today, Urban Space announced the Not Just a Container contest. They're offering free rent for six months to the most creative and innovative idea for one of the 160-square-foot shipping containers. You could envision a farm structure, store, art installation, even a work-sell space. Musicians, consider making an intimate venue in a box. Athletes, think up some activities for the local kids and you could have a start-up on your hands. It's all fair game.

Entries will be judged on design quality, sustainability, community impact, and entrepreneurship. Bonus: GOOD is a media partner for the competition and helping judge the entries. To find out more, click here.

Architect Barbie?!

Who’s savvy on design, carries a set of blueprints, and isn’t shy of the color pink? Sounds like Barbie, to me! That’s right: As the latest addition to Mattel’s “I Can Be” line of career dolls, the new Architect Barbie officially was introduced at Toy Fair, held February 13-16 at the Javits Center in New York. She boasts black glasses, a hard hat, a dress with a skyline motif, a pink tube to carry her blueprints, and a model pink house.

The new Barbie was created along with help from the AIA, although the organization officially did not partner with Mattel. Two AIA members in upstate New York, Kelly Hayes McAlonie, AIA, MRAIC, LEED-AP, and Despina Stratigakos, Associate AIA, “were part of the conversation with the company,” says an AIA spokesperson. The doll’s release conveniently coincides with the 125th anniversary of the first woman architect, Louise Blanchard Bethune. “We’re pleased that a new generation of young people have an opportunity to imagine becoming an architect. Look for the doll in stores later this year.

While many in A&D were hyped last year at the potential of an Architect Barbie (the doll was one of the options for the online I Can Be vote in 2010 but lost to News Anchor Barbie and Computer Engineer Barbie) and its potential generational outreach and inspiration to attract more women designers into the industry, not everyone is so pleased with the realization of the doll.

One site, Treehugger.com, critiques the doll’s appearance—her “fashionista” style and lack of career realism (she doesn’t look sleep deprived enough)—as well as the accompanying dollhouse, saying that “the real problem with Architect Barbie is that horrible house; it appears to have more plastic than the Monsanto House of the Future. In an era when we are trying to promote natural, healthy materials, she is in a Karim Rashid pink plastic palace.” Another comments that “she should be wearing all-black, including maybe a black mock turtle neck, and she needs to trim that pony tail. But that's just me.”

According to a U.S. Government Accountability Office report released Friday, if the United States were to replace its dollar bills with dollar coins, as much of the world has done, it would likely save the country $5.5 billion over the next 30 years. Because dollar coins are durable, capable of lasting decades, they're far more cost-efficient than dollar bills, which have a lifespan of about a year and a half. The report notes that though the initial transition would find the country incurring a loss for the first four years, each year beyond that would save the government millions.

America has introduced a dollar coin before, but the GAO says those efforts failed because the government didn't also take the dollar bill out of circulation, as Canada and the United Kingdom did when they traded paper for metal. "Officials from both [Canada and the U.K.] told GAO that this step was essential to the success of their transition and that, with no alternative to the note, public resistance dissipated within a few years."

Strangely, the majority of the public stands opposed to the dollar coin. Even when told it could save the country billions, 64 percent of Americans surveyed said they wouldn't want to see the dollar bill go away.

Curious About Electric Vehicles? You Can Now Rent a Tesla for $25

The parked car is making itself useful these days. Just last month, new startup Getaround launched a peer-to-peer marketplace that dramatically reduces the cost of driving by allowing users to rent cars from strangers using an iPhone. While you're sitting at your desk at work, your car can be out earning you money. Or if you're without a car, you can rent one from someone nearby.

"Since the invention of the automobile, we've been conditioned to think that only one person should own and use each car," says Getaround Co-Founder Elliot Kroo. "Getaround is changing that paradigm by enabling people to access a vehicle instead of having to possess one."

Getaround's latest initiative will no doubt attract legions of early adopters: Members can now try out the $108,000 Tesla Roadster for just $25 an hour.

Of course the Tesla (which is owned by a private individual who wants as many people as possible to experience it) isn't the only car available at Getaround. And other companies are jumping in the EV rental bandwagon, too. Hertz started renting out electric Smart cars in December, and just last week, rented out the first Chevy Volt. And Zipcar has been renting out alternative fuel vehicles for years.

Idea: A Gym Membership that Charges You for Not Exercising

Every year one of America's top New Year's resolutions is to join a gym and get in shape. And every year America just gets fatter. So what if our workout facilities started hitting us where it really counts; not in our guts, but in our pocketbooks?

That's the main idea behind Gym-Pact, a new company in Boston that partners with local vendors to offer discounts to consumers in exchange for weekly workout commitments. If you fulfill your commitment and attend the gym as promised, you get to skate along at reduced rates. But, if you choose to loaf and skip your agreed upon workouts, you're penalized at least $10 per day.

Gym-Pact is the bright idea of two 2010 Harvard grads, Yifan Zhang and Geoff Oberhofer, who were inspired by a lesson from their behavioral economics class: "[P]eople are more motivated by immediate consequences than by future possibilities." According to Zhang and Oberhofer, because many gym fees are paid for up front, people tend to give up on working out fairly easily, as they consider the cost sunk regardless of whether they go. But by instituting an immediate daily cost, the motivation behind the penalty drastically increases.

The fact that a large portion of land lies three meters below street level and the typical conformation of this urban batch 10X40 meters enabled a large open space that is straightforward and transparent. This space is defined in one side by the north face structure, a parallel free wall which houses a library containing 7,500 volumes and on the other side by a parallel block, an all closed space – a block with three stories that contains all the services, equipment and dormitories.
To access this block concrete stairs positioned parallel to the south limit of the bath, to access the wall of books metal platforms connected to the service block placed in an interleaved manner.
The design takes advantage from the difference between the street level and the lower level of the plot, by positioning the living room in this lower level which ensures the required privacy and maintains the view of the distant landscape through the void. This simple home adopts simple constructive solutions, reducing the actions required for its achievement. The structure of the volume is resumed to masonry walls and reinforced concrete. Installations are apparent and performed without interference. After that the finishes are simple: monolithic concrete flooring and white Portuguese Stone. The walls without finishes are ready as it built. A single exception: the wall with books, finished with time and history.

The most recent body of work that I have created is one which revolves around the awkward, violent and loving relationships that exist between humans, animals and the natural world. The situations and relationships depicted in the work are references to times in which I catch myself echoing my own childhood relationships with animals. As a child I often displayed the inability to recognize the order and requirements of nature. This disconnect is still evident in my life as I often mirror the same delusions of my adolescence.

The figures are often references to historical figures, generally explorers, which I adopt while reading biographical accounts of when natural and human worlds collide. I am interested in stories of Antarctic explorers and expeditions in which assumed knowledge of conditions ultimately failed the members involved. I extrapolate stories from the lives of these people and interject my own awkward experience of natural disconnect to create the myths of my life.

Evolver is an elegantly spiraling viewing structure constructed completely from wood that is located next to a clear alpine lake near Zermatt, Switzerland. Designed and built by second year students of the ALICE studio at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, this alpine structure provide a more interactive way to take in the views of the glorious mountains – especially the Matterhorn.

S piraling a total of 720 degrees around, the Evolver takes visitors through a series of arches that wind up around and down, offering a stunning view of the surrounding scenery. As you walk inside the wooden structure the panorama evolves, rises and falls, opening up new views with each step. In total, 24 round wooden frames make up the bones of Evolver, while wooden slats add structure and support.

Located next to the Lake Stelli at 2536 m (8,320 ft), Evolver serves as both a destination, an activity. and a pavilion for visitors to the Zermatt area looking to take in nature. It is beautifully constructed – a simple building made from a single material. The limited views offered by the structure are not meant to detract from the scenery, but instead help the viewer focus their attention on distinct areas.

UTOPIA REDUX

Daniel Meridor’s montages place us somewhere between hope and despair. Paused in time, we cannot be sure whether events are moving from a troubled world towards a more harmonious, serene one or the other way around. Or, whether he is depicting a world in which progress and decay, as well as technology and nature, coexist in a fragile, uncertain balance. Is this latter case the world of the present? We can hope it is, but despair at the thought that perhaps our civilization—now embracing the globe— cannot maintain its delicate balance.

Meridor’s generation—a younger one—has no faith in grand architectural plans to make a better world and especially not a best of all possible worlds. Yet a certain idealism remains. For some it takes the form of environmental consciousness and sometimes grand plans for healing the damage done to the planet by humankind—or, for more modest, ecologically sustainable designs. For others it takes the form of technological innovation using computers, the internet, and other electronic wonders. For only a relative few, however, does their idealism take the forms of isolated buildings that are the focus of the present generation of innovators—radical ‘new forms’ fail to inspire as they once did. The idealistic architects of Meridor’s generation are more critical and reflective than any in recent memory, which leads them to an emphasis on process rather than product, and into either direct engagement with communities in need or into teaching careers, which are not altogether unrelated activities.

Still, at the end of the day, architecture must concern itself with the design of spaces for people to live in. Important as criticism and reflectivity may be, they are not in themselves enough. Rather, they need to inform action, or they become academic. It is easy to see Meridor’s montages as social critiques—the detritus of industrial civilization encroaching on nature—or, as harbingers of technological salvation—the windmills as alternate, non-polluting sources of energy. However, they become much more interesting, and fruitful, if we see them as architectural proposals, that is, as designs for the present and perhaps, for a better future.

First of all, thinking about process, we have not seen much use of photomontage as a design tool since the work of the Russian Constructivists. the Bauhaus and, somewhat more recently, Archigram. It has the immediate advantage of employing the familiar and, by selection and rearrangement, transforming it into the new. At the very least, this enables us to see new potential in the existing and obviates the need to begin—in the usual utopian sense—from scratch. As a design technique, its weakness is that, in actuality, it is clearly easier, if not always better, to begin from a tabula rasa than to somehow work with what is already in place. On the other hand, if we think of a design drawing heuristically, as a guide and not an instruction, even the most descriptive drawing can be seen as only one example of what a particular way of thinking would produce in reality. Other examples remain to be invented in response to particular conditions and by different architects. The design drawing seen this way indicates a process, a way of thinking, and not a product.

So, for example, the piles of debris in Meridor’s montages indicate the importance of stochastic domains, governed by chance and probability, within well understood—or at least in presumably well understood—natural and designed landscapes. Another example: the floating technological objects indicate the need for the ubiquitous intervention of elements of unknown purpose, encouraging discovery, change, and the invention of new and experimental modes of living. Another: the treehouse invokes the times when, as children, many of us loved to climb trees. It was not an aggressive act, an attempt to conquer the tree or to control it, but rather a cooperation with a chosen tree, an acceptance of its offering of a ladder for us to reach new heights. In doing so, we did not destroy the tree, but fulfilled one aspect of its presence within the world we both inhabit. Is there a more poetic—or finally practical—idea of our creative interaction with nature?

The whole design of the montage and the landscape it envisions is governed by a complex visual sensibility, evoking—even celebrating—a tolerance for clear differences uncompromised by coexistence with one another. The mission of architecture, these designs suggest, cannot dispense with the aesthetic, for it is inseparable from the ethical, the way we choose to with live with all other things. And it extends far beyond property lines and the enclosure walls of buildings. This is almost, well, utopian.

Daniel Meridor is an architect who has worked closely with Bedouins in Israel, helping to negotiate the Bedouins’ nomadic ways of living with contemporary Israeli society. He is currently studying in the Graduate School of Architecture of The Cooper Union, in New York City.

the world's first space resort by galactic suite ltd., is set to open to tourists in 2012.

funded by 3billion dollars from an anonymous billionaire space enthusiast, the resort will be

a bio-inspired orbital station. it has been designed to be a modular space habitat structure

with a central-enclosed area where modules will be interconnected to a main docking port.

each of the modules will include a sliding diaphragm window to allow tourists a better view

of the earth.

the spaceship which will transport resort goers via a space tourism spacecraft which will be

designed to carry at least four passengers and two pilot-astronauts into orbit at an altitude

of 400 km, powered by a double hybrid rocket engine.

the journey begins at a spaceport facility located on a tropical island, where you will be able

to relax but also participate in an eight-week astronaut training course. after this is completed,

you will be launched into space on the spaceship to the space resort. on board, you will orbit

the earth at an average speed of 30, 000 km / h, completing 15 orbital rotations per day.

at this speed you will be carried around the world in 90 minutes. every 45 minutes you will be

watching the sunrise and sunset exploring a whole new world of sensory-perceptual experiences

in weightlessness.

to embark on this three-night stay in the space resort and eight-week training course on the

tropical island, this 'out of world experience' will cost you 3 million euros.

mom, its your new office! Nendo designed it just for you! you might trip, and your coworkers might not like it at all. but its cool looking! it makes your rethink how you enter someones space, im sure your office could use that.
